I'm just, duh, realizing what I'm sure everyone else already knows: House is Sherlock Holmes. It took the new Sherlock, with his aggravating ways, for the obvious to knock me down. Brilliant, addictive, sarcastic and abrasive, condescending to his best friend who nevertheless supports and aids him through the worst, and always, always right. I'm sure there are articles if not books on this.

ETA: There's certainly a Wikipedia entry on this.

LOL! I guess you didn't read any of the interviews with the writers of House when the show first aired, because they did talk about House = Holmes, Wilson (et al.) = Watson. They're such great archetypes, aren't they?

No, I started watching it in about S3, though by now I've seen most of the earlier ones. It is perfect.

And now I learn (from Alan Cumming's charming introductions to Sherlock) that Sherlock Holmes was inspired by a brilliant DOCTOR who taught Conan Doyle, so it all comes full circle, doesn't it?
