Success! In spite of my technical ineptitude, I can now connect to my ISP with my laptop at home. It took only three calls to tech support and two trips to Staples, but I have installed an ethernet adapter card in my old PC so that I could hook up the router and configure both computers. I'm amazed.

More traditionally but even more satisfying, I've knitted something for the first time in about ten years (you'll be able to tell that it's been a while).

This time I really need advice. I have the new laptop. It has a wireless card, etc. I have cable access to the internet via my ISP (Earthlink). I have an older desktop that I use with this cable access. The Earthlink tech support says that I can hook up the router (Netgear) and the cable modem (v.old Surfboard), and that will allow me to get wireless access on the laptop and cable access on the desktop. But that was all they were willing to say.

I hate having to deal with several different companies--none is willing to tell me everything I need to know. Does anyone foresee any problems with what I describe above? The Netgear info shows me how to hook it all up, but doesn't talk about what happens if only one of the computers has wireless capability.

Answers will not be in vain! And will be greatly, greatly appreciated.

I just broke down and bought myself a nice new laptop, hoping to be able to stay connected better on my wanderings. And right away I can't get it to read the CD of files I'd like to move from my desktop (made them using Roxio). I've been waiting for a Dell tech support chat operator for half an hour, and no one's answering, so I'm beginning to despair.

Does anybody have a guess as to whether this can be fixed by downloading some kind of driver, or is it likely to be bad hardware? It's an Inspiron 600.

Well, I'm back in SC* with my good connection** and hoping to be part of LJ again. I've missed you all! I'm not going to try to go back and catch up--just starting in with today for both reading and writing.

It's daunting. The housesitter left the house clean, more or less, and the front yard mowed, and most plants still alive--but the back yard is a true jungle--three months of rain and sun do wonders for weeds. It may be beyond me--possibly I'll just weed out the flower beds and wait until fall kills the rest of the mess and start over. I have to find a better solution--like not going away for three months at a stretch, for starters.

One of the outside semi-stray cats is here, fine and healthy. Haven't seen the other yet--hope she's ok.

And then my car has an indicator light flashing. So I won't be able to get down to the beach to see if we need new roof shingles until next week. Oh, well, plenty to do here.

Other than all that, welcome home, Mamcu! At least the AC was working***!

*After trying to leave Chicago from the wrong airport--since when does the second part of a round trip leave from another airport?

**After a long session restoring my cable connection that the housesitter messed up

*** So far, anyway

I'm really feeling very much at the mercy of the corporate world, as usual.
