I worked out on a reclined stationary bike this morning, the first good sustained aerobics since foot debacle. It felt good, but I did only a short session. Will see how my foot feels tomorrow, and if it's good, longer spells next week. Also started back with some free weights for upper body. My left quadriceps is going to be so much more developed than the right--a big change for me! It turns out that not being able to bend your ankle makes the whole leg very heavy to lift, when going upstairs.

I think this whole thing has been much harder for Bill than for me. All I have to do is sit around (and in a nasty winter, that's about what I'd want to do anyway). He has to drive me places and fetch things (well, not quite so much now that I'm out of the cast). Worst of all, though, we can't do much--he's not a big fan of movies and restaurants, and I'm not up for walks and museums for a while yet. Going to parties is fun in a different way--usually I'm the one who wanders around finding various people, but these days I sit and people come up to me.

Only a few more weeks of this left--hopefully I get out of the big boot on Feb. 15 and soon move on to driving and walking, just in time for spring (we hope spring is coming...)

Meanwhile, I'm into the third book of GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire--it did improve once I got into it, and I'm liking some characters I'd kind of forgotten. 2500 pages and counting. And last night I watched Nashville, which I'd somehow never seen. The very young Lily Tomlin, in a role that's not comic--and Ronee Blakely and Shelley Duval, actors I don't see anymore.

Hurrah for the first aerobic work, and hurrah hurrah for the rapid approach of Feb 15. :-)

Nashville is a brilliant movie. Everything Crash wishes it was.

Nobody does it like Altman. And that's a good comparison.

I heard once about a pair of tourists who did museums with a wheelchair and an inflatable cast. First one would ride while the other pushed. Then the other would put the cast on and ride. Recommend a wheelchair ride to Bill [evil grin].

That sounds like a great idea! We're sort of like some kind of folktale characters these days--he's really been suffering with tendinitis in his shoulders, so can't do much with his arms, and I can't do much with my leg--between us we can just about figure out a way to do everything, but did hire somebody to sweep and mop before I got out of the cast.

I would love cruising around a museum in a wheelchair, though.

Oh yeah -- like the year Pati broke her arm, John had an ear infection, and I had bronchitis -- among the three of us we were almost one effective person. Well, if his arms are bad he might not like the idea a lot, but it's something to think about.

Sending you good thoughts for continuing recovery. Re-reading/reading A Song of Ice and Fire is on my to-do list. I liked the first two books a lot, then sort of forgot the details while waiting and waiting for the next one or two to appear, and now feel I have to start all over again! Probably a summer project.

Thanks!

Yes, read it when you have a lot of time! It averages 1000 pages a book with just about as many characters. It's going to be an HBO mini-series in the fall (just the first book, so far), if that influences whether you want to re-read.
