Maybe we all sometimes think LJ is its own world, unrelated to real life (and maybe that's a good thing) but here's a case where LJ made something happen. A couple of years ago someone from my flist (maybe [livejournal.com profile] anom? (maybe [livejournal.com profile] arethusa2? ) suggested a way to reach high school students and help them think about peace. And here it's actually happening. I passed on the suggestion and others made it happen. Thanks, LJ (or more specifically, whichever of you great folks thought of this).

ETA: The thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] arethusa2!

That is so cool.
It really does show the power of a community, and to me LJ is that, and more.

And even better, maybe some kid will decide not to go off and get killed, and will join the Peace Corps instead.

That is so wonderful, especially if it gets kids to think of adding meaning to their lives through fighting for peace instead of war.

(Yes, it was me.)

It was such a great idea--really glad you thought of it. I hope this will make a difference in someone's life.

Posting this here because Jane's icon is just perfect for the topic!

It couldn't have been me, because I wasn't on anyone's friendslist a couple of years ago! But I'm sending my thanks to Arethusa & Mamcu for their parts in making this happen--it's great, & I'm glad to know about it. Any details from either of you--maybe a link to the original post, or even the story behind the part each of you played?

You can read about it in my old post (it's entertaining but also just a bit troublesome):

I think Arethusa's suggestion is in the comments. All I really did was take her suggestion to the group that I was working with that day and that is now sponsoring the scholarship.

Actually Arethusa's comments were on the next day's post:

Thanks for the links! This is really great, I'm glad to know it's going on.

The story behind it is interesting too. Was this incident before or after the time a man was thrown out of a mall for the T-shirt he was wearing? I can't remember what it said now, but at least a mall is private property--isn't the military supposed to be protecting our rights, like, oh, say, free speech? Sheesh. Then just a couple of months ago there was the guy who wasn't allowed to board a (commercial) plane wearing a T-shirt that said "We will not be silent" in Arabic & English.

BTW, I just read a story in Grist magazine about another kind of encouragement for young activists (http://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2006/10/27/youth_awards/), this one in the environmental arena. Since this is the place for green thoughts, I figure it fits!
