Maybe we all sometimes think LJ is its own world, unrelated to real life (and maybe that's a good thing) but here's a case where LJ made something happen. A couple of years ago someone from my flist (maybe
anom? (maybe
arethusa2? ) suggested a way to reach high school students and help them think about peace. And here it's actually happening. I passed on the suggestion and others made it happen. Thanks, LJ (or more specifically, whichever of you great folks thought of this).

It really does show the power of a community, and to me LJ is that, and more.

It couldn't have been me, because I wasn't on anyone's friendslist a couple of years ago! But I'm sending my thanks to Arethusa & Mamcu for their parts in making this happen--it's great, & I'm glad to know about it. Any details from either of you--maybe a link to the original post, or even the story behind the part each of you played?

I think Arethusa's suggestion is in the comments. All I really did was take her suggestion to the group that I was working with that day and that is now sponsoring the scholarship.

The story behind it is interesting too. Was this incident before or after the time a man was thrown out of a mall for the T-shirt he was wearing? I can't remember what it said now, but at least a mall is private property--isn't the military supposed to be protecting our rights, like, oh, say, free speech? Sheesh. Then just a couple of months ago there was the guy who wasn't allowed to board a (commercial) plane wearing a T-shirt that said "We will not be silent" in Arabic & English.
BTW, I just read a story in Grist magazine about another kind of encouragement for young activists (http://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2006/10/27/youth_awards/), this one in the environmental arena. Since this is the place for green thoughts, I figure it fits!
