Happy New Year!

It may be late, but it's so nice to be able to offer a greeting that's not laden with overtones of somebody's controversy.

Unless you celebrate New Year in September, or February... (never mind! Most cultures seem very happy to have several new year celebrations--you can't start anew too often). My resolution: every day is New Year's.

I spent this particular one watching new stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher being installed in our rental house at the beach--not one of them was without some problem that made the installer say he couldn't do it, so my poor brother-in-law took time off from building his own mountain house (!) to come put in a 220-socket and a water line. Thank whatever for talented relatives.

It was a beautiful weekend on the marsh, clear and cool until this morning. The thunderstorms started rolling in, and I had to leave at 5:30 to drive back here to a funeral of a former co-worker, so I was driving in the dark and the pouring rain for over an hour at a time when sensible people are still hitting the snooze button. But I made it.

I didn't achieve my 2005 resolution of doing an unassisted handstand--on NY Eve I tried one last time but still had one toe on the wall. But that's in keeping with my theory that making some progress toward the goal is what matters. And it's a lot more than I could do this time last year.

Hope time and weather are kind to all of you and that 2006 brings you a little nearer to what you really want, too. And if every day is New Year's Day, every night's a celebration...

...funny you should hope not-controversy: I mentioned 'happy western new year' to a chinese acquaintance from online while writing to her about something else, and she got all huffy about 'contrary to your belief, I am not western but chinese'...ahahaha! It astounded me, and I had to explain that if it were any other holiday, I would have innocently said happy-that too...

...it sounds like a lovely week...good for you!

I spent six months in Beijing, and they certainly celebrated Jan 1 there--they were calling the Asian New Year "Spring Festival" instead of New Year. Maybe your person was from a more traditional Chinese background like Taiwan.

My Tibetan (by birth, and also by type of Buddhism) teacher just gave me a new string of prayer flags to put up for the Jan. 1 celebrations, even though we do have Losar dinners every year. Like I say, you can't have too many New Years.

And hope your celebrations were and will be good!

...who's your teacher? You must just have answered it in reply to my answer to you, but...

Well, actually we have a spiritual director--Geshe Dakpa Topgyal, who lives in a nearby city and does the major teaching--and then we have been bringing resident teachers from his monastery in India. The one who looked like your icon was Geshe Phuntsok, and now we're working on immigration for Geshe Sherab Gyaltsen. They're all Gelug.

...is there a website so I can see these teachers and what programs are offered?

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Of course!

Here's the very small local group:

http://www.scdharma.org/

And here's the larger group where Geshe Topgyal is resident:

Is there a link to yours?

...well, there is no 'mine', no one center that I always go to, but there are some excellent teachers whom I have benefited from:

www.garchen.org (I think it's org and not com, but I might bwe wrong)

www.zangdokpalri.org
for the excellent teacher Kunsang Detchen Lingpa, whom I have seen for the last five or so years, and highly recommend...

My resolution: every day is New Year's.
I really like that idea!

Only one toe on the wall is still pretty good.

Thanks! I think I get all the physical benefits just by being inverted, and it shows I have the strength. Just wrestling with the fear, here. That's why it even matters. And of course next there's springing up--right now I'm still walking up the wall.

And a happy one to you--don't remember where I got that icon, but I love it, too.

unassisted handstand. that is, well, a GREAT resolution but a tough one. good luck getting it this year! i'll be happy with a comfy headstand for now...

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Yeah, I used to have a hard time with headstand but now it is pretty comfortable. But the thing about the handstand for me is needing to get over being scared to do it. I carry all my weight in my arms, but just can't quite let go of that little touch on the wall. Next year!

I like your every day is New Year's resolution! Hope springs eternal after all, plus as you say, more reason to drink.

And a very happy New Year to you.

More champagne! Hard to combine with handstand, maybe has to be sequential.
