!gracias!

And I want a birthday present from you: !the secret of the upside-down exclamation point! !& the question mark too! Just in the last few days, I've tried to use the exclamation point in LJ posts, & their system won't let me. Yet !there it is in your post! ?How'd you do that? I've been resorting to putting ones right side up where the upside-down ones should go, but it just doesn't look right.

BTW, I've got a Machado poem to recommend: the one that starts "Dice la razon: Busquemos la verdad." [Dang! I wanna know how to do the accents too!] It's a dialog btwn. reason & the heart about truth. Really cool, a favorite.

¡muchísimas gracias!

I think I found the right set of codes (there's a lot of them!). Let's see...I'll try it both in the subject line y aquí en el mensaje.

(post-preview) Very interesting. Message yes, subject line no. And yet mamcu got it to work in her subject line!

I notice the numbers in the codes are the same ones I use w/Alt to get accents etc. in email & board posts. That's easier than &#____;, which kinda looks like cussin'!

now, that's really weird

That box in the message body? I typed in a & and a #, standard characters right from the keyboard, immediately followed by the underscore. Yet the 1st 2 characters turned into a box, while the underscore remained the way I typed it.

And now I see mamcu's next post...I'll try that for the subject line. Although...[continued under mamcu's post]

Re: now, that's really weird

¡I find the ALT plus number works much better!

I just made sure NumLock was on, held ALT and at the same time typed 0161.

¡See if that works!

Re: now, that's really weird

I did try that! It's the same thing I usually do, but once again I got the inverted exc. point in the reply window, a box in Preview, & an error message when I tried to Submit it. And yes, the NumLock light is on.

Yep, same thing just happened again. [deletes attempted IEP]

Re: now, that's really weird

I can try, but I have a feeling it'll just lose the formatting, like when we quote each other in LJ & the ital or whatever drops out: "[]See if that works!" OK, the ex. point came out fine in the message window--now let's see what happens in the Preview & Submit attempts.

(post-preview) Yup, it's a box in the preview. Bet it doesn't go through when I try to Submit it.

(post-submit attempt) Sure enough, "Bad Unicode Input." Oh, well, it was worth a try.

Re: !gracias!

I will read that! Finally getting back to my books and Spanish study. Thanks!

Re special characters: Here's a message someone sent me that I've been using--be sure the number pad at the right of the keyboard is locked, and then hopefully these will work for you:

I'm not sure if there's a website. But Windows has this utility called "Character Map" (Start->Run and type 'charmap' then Enter) which can help you in this matter. The "¡", I got it from there (I have a spanish keyboard ;))
I'll make a list of the ones I know:

Accented a (á) -> Alt+160
Accented e (é) -> Alt+130
Accented i (í) -> Alt+161
Accented o (ó) -> Alt+162
Accented u (ú) -> Alt+163
ñ -> Alt+164
Ñ -> Alt+165
ü -> Alt + 129
ï-> 139
ò->149
Ä->142
¡(Inverted exclamation mark) -> Alt+0161
Opening Question Mark (¿) -> Alt+168
alt key and 0171 on your numberpad makes «
alt key and 0187 on your numberpad makes »

[]gracias a las dos!

...when I pasted 'Bit's link into the document where I keep my list of accent codes, I saw that I already had a different list, which I'd labeled "acentos para LJ (gracias a mamculuna)." It's the same as the one in your comment above, except w/out the umlauted letters & the guillemets (& I only know the name for those from 'Bit's page, hee!). That's when a vague memory of getting those accents from mamcu (in chat?) surfaced. I think I tried them then & they didn't work. Oddly, some of the codes on the list are the same as the ones I already had ([]) & some aren't ([]). So we'll see how they come out.

(post-preview) Yyyyeh. That 1st box was supposed to be the inverted ex. point & the 2nd one the inverted q. mark. OK, still not working for me. Guess I'll use the ones w/the "& #" in message bodies & just try to avoid accents in subject lines, till I figure out what the problem is. Maybe it's my browser? But I don't see why that would make a difference. >suspiro< ¿Quién sabe?

(post-attempt to submit, gaaahh!) So I try to post this, & I get this page: "Bad Unicode Input:
Your browser sent some text which is not recognised as valid text in the UTF-8 encoding, as it should be. This might happen if you forced your browser to view the previous page in some other encoding rather than UTF-8. It may also indicate a bug in the browser. If you cannot get around this error, contact us." OK, I'm replacing all the boxes w/"[]."
