I notice that Robin McKinley got some Newberry Awards, which I think are only for "young adult" novels? If so, not surprising that I like her so much (let's face it, what was the intended demographic for LOTR, originally?) I'm pretty sure my reading self, at least my favorite one, is 12 years old. Anyway, love Sunshine (review at http://www.nesfa.org/reviews/Carey/sunshine.htm).
This book is really charming. Its setting reminds me a bit of Sean Stewart's novels set after the Magic comes, with the contrast of every-dayness and the creepy threats of the Others, but that's also a bit like the Buffyverse, too. Guess it just works. Also love the voice of Sunshine, great comic throw-aways.
It's a bit like Anita Blake not-quite-so-dark, too, what with the friendly vampire, the not-quite-so bad Were-everythings (Were-chickens?), but the heroine is not quite so perfect, and thank god, the men don't wear curly hair down to their lacy cuffs.
I can't quite decide if McKinley is American or British--hey, maybe she's Canadian?
