10 things I've done that no one else on my flist has done (but somehow I'll bet at least one of you has done at least one of these--hard to be unique around here):

1.Stopped a potential riot by dancing in the street

2.Put a motorcycle in the trunk of a rented car and drove from Detroit to San Francisco

3.Got really, really drunk on baijiu (distilled millet spirits) and fell down in a Beijing disco

4.Went up in the little spy chamber the FBI uses to watch postal workers handle the mail and didn't get caught

5.Drank palm wine which had been fermenting all day

6.Went backwards in a kayak down a six foot fall on the French Broad River (well, an inflated kayak--I'm not really a white water person)

7.Rode a Greyhound Bus from South Carolina to California

8.Flew in a helicopter from Berkeley to SF Airport

9.Had Dennis Kucinich spend the night at my house, and had organic oatmeal and distilled water available to feed him

10.Went to my ex-husband’s birthday party and had a good time with him and his girlfriend and both their families

Hmm...does riding in a fully-loaded U-Haul truck, pulling a trailer, from North Carolina to California, count as almost equivalent to the SC-CA bus ride? It's less crowded, but takes about as long and is almost as uncomfortable, especially when the air-conditioning quits in Nevada.

WEll, my sister and her son just did that from Atlanta to Seattle, and from their tales, I'll take the bus any day! At least if you fall off the mountain you have a lot of company, that way. You are a hardy soul.

Stopped a potential riot by dancing in the street

Oh, I want details!

It was the 60's of course, and Berkeley, you might guess. Big protests, me involved, of course. In an earlier one, the non-violent aspect had been much threatened by police violence and response on our side, and a person had been killed (this was not long before Kent State). I'd seen first hand (my husband being attacked by plain clothesemen) that the police liked having the protests turn violent, partly for their own reasons and partly for the media coverage--it really discredited the anti-war movement if there was violence. On the day of the protests, I was riding with a group of motorcyclists at the head of the several thousand person group, and we were met by a group of police with riot gear. There were also a lot of news cameras around. It was tense, to say the least. I and some others without even talking about it jumped off our bikes and started dancing, and the others clapped a rhythm for us. It was really hard for the police to attack dancing people in front of the camera, so eventually they fell back and let us continue the march.

Seems very wild and crazy now, now to say dumb in many ways, but made sense at the time.

The boy mayor

Clevelanders have a love-hate relationship with the former boy mayor, even the crazy libs! He did the right thing with the muni power company but that put the city into bankruptcy. He fought the big business interests that have always had a tight relationship with city government.
