Day One: Ten things you want to do some day.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight qualities you think are awesome in other people.
Day Four: Seven (semi)interesting things you've pondered or thought about recently.
Day Five: Six things you are glad you did.
Day Six: Five books/movies/tv series/etc that you'd recommend
Day Seven: Four silly quirks
Day Eight: Three pet peeves
Day Nine: Two things for which you're proud of yourself.
Day Ten: One secret plan

So here's 9 things about me, but I think everybody reading this knows all this and more:

1. Speak a little bit of five languages and read a little of two more, but I've forgotten the Arabic alphabet. Need practice!!!
2. Love bodysurfing.
3. Still good friends with my ex.
4. Good baker, but unfortunately tend to eat everything I make, so don't do it often.
5. Don't dye my hair--just let the gray, brown, blonde, red hang out for all to see.
6. One degree of separation: Dennis Kucininch spent the night in my guest room when he was campaigning because of the NAACP boycott on SC, and Kyra Sedgwick was in a yoga class with me when Kevin Bacon was filming here.
7. Have traveled in 48 states and 16 countries on 4 continents (what is Central America, though--North America, South America, or a continent of its own?)
8. Still holding to the mostly-vegetarian diet, with meat maybe once a week, sometimes more or less. Trying hard not to eat factory-farmed meat, which makes a good clear rule, but do make an exception for a certain BBQ...
9. Never met a kayak I didn't like (but I haven't met any whitewater ones).

I love kayaking, too!

That's a good meme - I like those questions better than the other x number of days one that's been doing the rounds. Think I might do it, seeing as I'm overdue for a post...

Do it! It is fun. And glad to know of another kayaker.

1. I used to know the Arabic alphabet as well. I guess I didn't have much reason to keep up with it for many years while I was working.

6. A Nobel Literature Prize winner made my girlfriend cry in person. I didn't punch him, but I did snub the rest of the lecture series he was giving. ;o) Naturally, my girlfriend went on to publish articles on his works.

8. What? Barbecued pork isn't a vegetable? Are you sure?

So! Ya think we know all these little factoids, huh? Well here are the ones I didn't know:

I didn't know how many language you spoke!! lemme guess: English, Spanish, German, Arabic (LOL-cuz you said so), and...um...French.

I didn't know the body surfing thing.

I also didn't know about your brushes with famous folks or about the kayaking. Maybe I'm still too new. :)

Some of the others I didn't know, but I could have guessed.

Good guesses on the languages. I could barely hold a stumbling conversation in Spanish and French, get around and order a meal in German and Mandarin. I don't count Arabic since I don't remember it!

Heh, thought I wrote about the beach all the time. You will know, this summer! I guess I think that if I ever wrote about something once, I write about it all the time.

And everybody has their famous-people stories, just different people, usually.

so what are your 5 languages?

I have some famous people encounters, but they are not very interesting.

My encounters aren't interesting either.

I can do a halting conversation in French and Spanish, get around and order food in German and Mandarin, and probably the same in Italian. I read French and Spanish fairly well and the other three with a LOT of dictionary help. I also read Anglo-Saxon and some Latin (used to read Latin better), again with major dictionary help.

Not really fluent in anything but English, but if I'm in a country where the language is spoken, I get much better very quickly!

For the record, I love your hair.
You're a polyglot! Who knew? ;)
I speak a little French, a little more Spanish, and a smidge of Greek. I was once almost fluent in Spanish, and could carry on a reasonable conversation in Greek, but unfortunately the years have reduced my grasp of the languages.
Still pretty fluent in English, though!

Well, emphasis should be on "little bit"--I'm not really fluent in anything but English. I can get much better fairly quickly in Spanish if I'm in a country where it's spoken, but I'm too old now to ever be truly fluent.
