I bought new shoes--the kind with separate toes:

Sorry about the sparklies--not vampire shoes, just have reflectors that I hadn't noticed until I took the picture.

I think most people use these for sports, but I need more cushioning for walking miles on pavement and do yoga barefoot, so these are for my more extreme sport--just walking around the house. Between lack of balance in my inner ear and ADD, I've had more falls than I like (some with unpleasant consequences), so I'm hoping these will make me safer. And they feel wonderful! Weigh only about 6 ounces. It really is like being barefoot with more traction and protection.

I just look a little like "Brother from Another Planet." Or hopefully "Sister.."

Yes, falling is pretty bad. I use a cane on days I feel especially unstable. I would have to get toe shoes with the second toe distinctly longer than the first, and I doubt they exist!

Now what color are you going to do the toenails?

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Actually, the toes are pretty long, and I think a lot of people have toes like yours, so they might actually fit better than you think. The trick is getting used to putting them on--you have to learn how to get the toes in the slots (like gloves, but most of us are able to do that).

I'm not exactly unstable unless I slip and/or get distracted and don't pay attention, but once I start to tip, over I go. Or down, as the case may be.

Hard choice, the toenails!

Never apologize for sparklies.

I hope they work for you. They look cute too!

People do look at them a little oddly, but I just act as if everyone had toes on their shoes.

I can always retire them to kayak shoes if I get tired of that.

Heh, just noticed the Sparkle Edward icon! Perfect! So funny.

My brother has similar shoes for running, except they're black. He swears they're great for his knees but they do look a bit odd when he's in shorts and white socks.

I agree about the knees! I've only worn them for a couple of days, but my knees already feel better. I'm still not convinced that my body could handle them with a lot of pounding on the pavement, though.

My niece's husband has shoes-with-toes that are a bit sturdier. He likes them a lot. I hope you enjoy yours, too.

I saw those--sort of suede-y. So far, they're great!

UFO feet! Are those Vibram shoes? They look as if the toes are attached to each other.

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Yes, these are Vibram. The toes aren't attached. And they feel so good. Also the socks.

It's like shoes were reinvented!

And Yoga Toes!! Maybe my feet will catch on.

I run in that exact model. I love the fit so much. And I've been wearing them for close to three months -- no strains, no pains.

I haven't tried to use them as a primary urban walking shoe though. I went for a couple of hour-long walks in their predecessors, the KSOs, and my first walk was good and the second not so much, but that might have been the blistering. The Bikilas are just the perfect fit for me.

I don't know what I'm going to do when it's below twenty here though.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy them!

Those are new to me, but amazing! And anything that makes you feel better and ambulate more stably--excellent! I wish my dad had some--but he's so vain, he'd probably never wear them.

Was coming out of an unfamiliar building with two older friends yesterday and the woman missed the small step down--just tumbled before either her husband or I could do a thing. Fortunately, she was just shaken, not seriously injured. But it was scary. I hate falling.

Unfortunately, no shoes can prevent the kind of accident your friend had, and I have tripped over things at ankle height, so I know the won't do miracles. But hopefully will prevent slipping. Definitely safer than Crocs, which I suspect of causing my last tumble on stairs.

Sounds like (and from the store, looks like) they're getting really popular. Maybe your dad will decide they're the new hip thing.

I don't run in anything, but may try them on a longer walk and see how they work. Still can't believe that the way they're made can make up for the lack of cushioning, but will experiment. But no, not in snow or ice...

From: [identity profile] dherblay.livejournal.com

I'd be careful about jumping into the longer walks too quickly. At least in running, the change in the mechanics needs to be eased into -- too much too soon and you could have problems.

I'll probably try a block more each time, but don't quite understand why the shoes are different from being barefoot. I walk miles on the beach barefoot, but probably the difference between walking in the sand and walking in the city is huge.

I was going to say that my son has several pairs. But you know that by now. I want a pair, but I haven't been able to get my toes in the right pockets yet and so I give up before I get them on to see if the size is right.

vampire shoes!!

wow!!! are the toes really kept in their own little compartments? I have never seen such a thing.

That would suck to fall a lot. I never do and have always been very sure-footed. A couple years ago when I fell and broke my ankle, besides being in pain, I was also just plain shocked. Me? FALL???

From: [identity profile] anomster.livejournal.com

So do you wear toe socks w/these, or no socks? I think it'd feel weird to have anything btwn. all my toes! Maybe the uppers are really thin?

And I'm sorry to hear you've had a lot of falls! I actually tripped on an uneven sidewalk Sunday & had this strangely gradual fall. Scraped the heels of my hands & 1 knee, but that was all. I trip at home but usually catch myself & don't fall. I hope the separate-toe shoes work to keep you from falling.

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Well, just one fall this year, but broke my foot with that one! I don't fall so often, but more than other people. I just think it's dangerous for me to wear clogs, etc.

Sorry to hear about your fall! Sounds unpleasant, but I'm glad it wasn't more serious.

Yes, these have socks. The between-the-toes feels good to me, but I know other people can't stand it.
