Has everybody seen this:
My sister really complains a lot about our mother, but I've always been glad that she had already learned that you can be happy and successful and loved, even with the nose and a half that she passed on to me. Now she was a difficult mom, but as I get older and older, I never cease to be glad that the difficulty was all centered around achievement. My stepdaughters sadly got one more like the mom in the clip, and they've both had plastic surgery (even though both really were just fine--even had nice little noses) and expensive trips to rehab, and haven't been able to find a work or a person to love through life. This clip makes me so angry on their behalf. It wouldn't have been easy, but I wish I'd known them when they were much younger and could have told them what I'm glad I learned: "Pretty is as pretty does."

I don't get the drive toward beauty or fashion. I almost feel sorry for the driven. I only had a son, so the topic never came up in parenting -- probably a good thing seeing as how I would have been dumbfounded by it. Even my dad said that he could not imagine what I would have done with a girl.

And I want to answer you in that last post from your LJ, if I can ever get through grading papers and have time to *think* for a few minutes!
