I write like

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

And that would be nice, except that it turns out I also write like Stephen King and HP Lovecraft. And ee cummings writes like Kurt Vonnegut.

Since I've done some stylistic analysis in the past, I'm guessing they must be using some kind of crude measures to get these wild answers. Still, it's fun.

i got the same result. SO FUNNY YOU PUT OTHER WRITERS IN THERE!!!!

eta: when you got the other results for your own writing, did you put in the same text? or did you use different text?

I used different texts for my own writing...should see if it varies even with the same text.

the laughing guy makes me laugh. :)

my friend sahar played around with this meme some and got a bunch of different results, too. i think i'll go put the same text in and see what happens.

same text, same result. so i tried going in with a different browser. same text, same result. i wonder what sort of factors determine the result??

still ee cummings and kurt vonnegut? do you see any resemblance there? LOL!

I think they probably use things like sentence length, some measure of how unusual words are, and maybe something like complexity of sentences, sentence fragments, how sentences begin--those are all easy to count with a computer.

Vonnegut and cummings--I used the poem I posted a while back for cummings (so many selves...) and of course have no idea what texts they're using for Vonnegut. The poem has a lot of repeated variations on the same sentence structure, and I'm sure Vonnegut does that sometimes. That poem doesn't have either very colloquial or very literary language--or they just might be counting the occurrences of the same words in both.

And ee cummings writes like Kurt Vonnegut.

Now you've gone and destroyed my faith in the unshakable accuracy of this meme. LOL

My skepticism was firmly in place after the first of our flist cohort posted her results. I know who I write like, and I seriously doubt that person is in their database.

I tried the first four paragraphs of all of my fics and got about 50% Stephen King, 25% James Joyce (?!), and randomly George Orwell, Chuck Pahuliak (sp?) and H.P. Lovecraft.

I had begun to wonder if there were any female authors amongst the group of writers at all, but there's at least one.

Yeah, I wondered about the women, too. Why no Virginia Woolf? Maybe nobody writes like her (as if that would matter to this meme).
