This is not all of them, but the ones that seemed interesting to me:
Five Things You May Not Know About My Time in School are:
1.At one time I could sight-read Beowulf in the original.
2.I failed algebra even though I could have made an A by just doing my homework once in a while. But I loved chemistry and made a 99 in it.
3.I started graduate school in 1963 and completed my final degree in 1992. That’s why they call them terminal degrees…
4.I almost went back and got a degree in physical therapy. Even relearned algebra to prepare and then decided I never wanted any other job again. Or not now, anyway.
5.I learned to read by not going to school. It doesn’t work for everybody.
Five Things You May Not Know About the Job (Jobs) I Have (or Had) are:
1.I was once a spy for Shoney’s and Captain D’s.
2.The worst job I ever had was telephone solicitation. The best job I had was teaching science fiction.
3.I’ve taught in maximum security prisons. Murderers doing life + 99 make great liberal arts students—they don’t have any plans to get a job, anyway. And they don’t bother with getting their aggressions out in petty ways.
4.Teaching in China was my second best job.
5.Not working at all rocks beyond measure.
Five Things You May Not Know About My Core Personality are:
1.I seem to have changed completely in the course of my life. I used to be such an introvert and now I’m really an extrovert. But maybe it was the job I had—maybe I’ll change.
2.Is there a difference between being habit prone and being addiction prone?
3.I am able to do things I really fear, like flying, if it means doing something I really want.
4.Unfortunately, I seem to have developed a way of shielding myself from painful things—internally, I mean.
5.I think I’m happy...
Five Things You May Not Know that I Desperately Want are (in no order):
1.To go to India (and Ireland and New Zealand and Greece and…)
2.To speak Spanish (and Mandarin) reasonably fluently
3.For my husband to learn to love kayaking
4.An iPod
5.A new bicycle (actually 2—one for here and one for the beach)
1. May only have one: I have a signed picture of SMG in my bedroom (gift, but still…)
Five Things You May Not Know About What I Do in a Typical Day are:
1.Eat oatmeal every morning with blueberries and oat bran and flax seed—and drink green tea. Eat cheese and drink wine at night. Lunch is personfood: tuna on crackers (but sometimes with chipotle mayo)
2.Read for an hour before I do anything but eat. Anything: the Dalai Lama, Harry Potter, Laurence Ferlinghetti, the tea box--I'll read it.
3.Talk to Bill on the phone three or four times if he’s not where I am (even when I was at work—I think he was born with a telephone implant, and hey, I’m always happy to hear a friendly voice. That does not count if call involves computer in any way)
4.Write for at least a couple of hours (not counting online time); swim and/or kayak at the beach, bicycle in Chicago, walk here (but sometimes in the swamp or by the river)
5.Watch MASH and Northern Exposure reruns until late, late at night.
Five Things You May Not Know that are Really Important to My Character are (not necessarily attributes I possess, but rather things I strive for, or value, and values in others):
1.I would really like to be able to be honest, but I also like to be kind and I want to make things happen that I think are important. Sometimes these are mutually exclusive. I’d like to learn balance, to choose wisely.
2.I’d like to finally make a spiritual commitment and not lapse in my various practices. A disciplined life, I guess, is what I want.
3.I’d like to have the courage to do what is right, for the world and for me. I have a crazy courage, for things like swimming in rough surf, but I want a thoughtful courage. Like my friend who had a double mastectomy to make it more likely that she’d live to see her grandchildren grow older. Not that I ever want to have to make that choice—but whatever choice comes, I want to be brave enough to do what I know I should.
4.I’d like to learn something new about myself.
5.I would like to be a better friend, sister, wife, cat owner, etc: I’m not yet sure I give as much as I take.
