Well, Friday we went up to work on the new house, expecting to get the kitchen painted. We got the trim primed and the cracks mended, and went out to a nice dinner with friends and a very nice winebar/bookstore (a perfect combination).

And the next morning woke up quite sick, both of us. Started with slightly upset stomachs and then began to be a horrible fevery tired achy thing. We feared the onset of flu and headed home. At first I drove, but it became very difficult to stay in the lane (not good, on the interstate!) so finally we pulled over, drooped for a while, and started off again with Bill driving. We avoided major collisions and got back to our fair city.

Just in time to meet the rush of cars leaving the stadium from the major football game of the year--between us and home. Everywhere we turned (practically delirious by now) there were orange cones and cops motioning us to go the other way. Bill finally found a tiny side street which we headed down, only to find ourselves in the midst of drunken revelers doing a line dance in the middle of the street.

So now we're the grumpy old people who don't know what fun is...

On the good side, we woke up this morning feeling much better, and it was a lovely warm day, so we had nice walks. And the kitchen will wait.

Oh no! I'm glad you're feeling better -- hope the recovery goes swiftly. [hugs]

I think it was one of those 24 hours things, because by now I feel fine. I think I'm of the age that's immune to the H1N1. Thanks!

How horrible - not only to be sick, but to HAVE to drive when you're that miserable. Glad you're feeling better.

Me too! It's amazing how fast you can go from sick to well to (thank goodness!) well again.

Feeling sympathy with the whole plans getting wiped out. Any chance you got food poisoning from the winebar? That would be a shame since you liked it, but it sure sounds like a possibility. Good luck with the painting!

We thought that at first, but since it was more fever than upset stomach, we suspect a virus from the Thanksgiving dinner crowd.

And very sorry about your TG misfortune--much worse! At least ours got over with quickly. Hope you're recovering, too.

Hope you're back on top in no time.

And I don't understand why anyone would drive to a stadium just to get caught for hours in all that traffic. I mean, isn't that why they invented television?

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Really. I can only think it's an excuse to get drunk.

I would have been in such a pissy mood if I had encountered that.

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

At the time, we were too exhausted to be mad--we just fell on the closest flat surface and slept for a while. And by the next day, it seemed almost funny. But since we live near the stadium and have long and complicated relationships with the local uni, we're generally permanently pissed at the games. Which they usually lose.

O)h, the joy of moving away from a stadium! Maybe it is time to put a bed in the new place just-in-case.

If we'd known we'd recover, we could probably have been fine on the inflatable mattress we use up there (although it only stays inflated for part of the night---really, you're right. A small investment).

Oh, the fever/stomach thing while driving sounds just awful! Glad you made it home OK and are better now.

I lived across the street from the U of Michigan stadium for a couple of years in Ann Arbor. I had to time my comings and goings to avoid the pre- and post-crowds. More than once I misjudged and was caught in a mindless swarm that was going the opposite direction from me.

Usually we know by the roars, or keep the schedule in mind, but we hadn't expected to come back then and didn't think about it. We also have the state fair next to the stadium and railroad tracks blocking us in three directions. Aside from that, it's a great neighborhood (actually, it is....just not at certain times).

Well...actually, that is one good part. But we're actually having second thoughts. In fact, I've been reluctant all along. This could turn out to be an investment house that gets resold after fixing up...or not. I do like the other place, but it's in the mountains where the winters are much worse, and all the roads to it are small and twisty. It's in town though, so maybe they clear/salt/whatever the roads pretty quickly. We'll see.

Yike! Sounds scary. I'm glad you got home OK & are both feeling better. And you can't have much fun when you're sick--doesn't mean you don't know what it is!

BTW, I like that icon. What's the .org at the bottom?

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

The American Friends Service Committee (http://www.afsc.org/), a Quaker group. We've had it as a yard sign for a long time.

From: [identity profile] anomster.livejournal.com

I'm surprised--not surprised that you're using a Quaker icon, but that it doesn't seem to match the letters at the bottom, even allowing for their being cut off. Hmm. [uses FreeRice search bar] It's the Friends Committee on National Legislation! OK, that makes sense. Thanks.

From: [identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com

Your eyes are better than mine! I coudn't even read those letters. I don't remember where I snagged this, probably not off that site.

From: [identity profile] anomster.livejournal.com

Heh. Not that much better--I tried 4 diff't. letter combos before I got the right one! And the text sampled in the search does sound appropriate: "The Friends Committee on National Legislation lobbies the U.S. Government on alternatives to war, how to respond to acts of violence on American soil, military..." (didn't follow the link to see the rest).
