I am so not ready to leave the warm beach and go to cold weather. Looking at Weather Underground for Chicago and California, not a good idea.

I can't even remember what to wear, when I'm barefoot and tank top here. Fleecy PJ's, socks, jackets, hats--hats!? Time to open the drawers I had shut, I guess.

Well, soon I'll be packing it all up and heading for the mountains, which are warmer than California and Chicago, at least. And have to remember that the beach gets cold too....just a little later...

Tomorrow I leave for Colorado for four days. I packed carefully yesterday, because I have so very few nice clothes--why scrimp to buy something I'll wear once a year, if that? But everything has been washed so many times, the seams are all giving, and they hang like rags. But they're cool enough to bear.

Then I thought this morning, better look at the weather report. I never look at the weather. Why, when 355 days of the year it's "Blistering hot and smoggy"? 35 degrees???? SNOW????? The last time I saw snow was 1972!

So I had to unpack the suitcase. Good thing? I get to wear long sleeves! I can't remember the last time I got to wear long sleeves. I even packed one of the two beautiful sweaters I was given, and have never worn. It's never, EVER cool enough for a sweater.

bad? I spent a solid hour hunting for sox. I found three. All three singletons. Well, I'll just trade them off. I refuse to pay money we don't have for something I might never wear again. Ditto shoes besides my sandals.

But I still don't believe that forecast. I keep expecting them to say "Gotcha! It
ll be 105, hazy with smog. As usual."

I was like that for a long time, until I started these regular visits north. Every time I'm in Chicago, I check the thrift shops and now have a pair of boots, a downy coat, and some really warm socks and hats and gloves. For me, it's the difference between 90 and 60, this time of year--I have those clothes, but can't remember how cold it's really going to be. I always wind up packing sleeveless dresses and shorts, "just in case," I hopefully tell myself. And never wear them.

Another thing is packing those winter things--one shirt and pair of pants, and my little suitcase is half full--to say nothing of sweaters and scarves and fleece...ugh.

I wish I could empathize, but I am SO READY FOR COLD WEATHER. Honestly. I could just scream. I'm so sick of summer.

But then most people don't have 105-118 summers, either.

I know I'm weird. I would happily live in a tropical climate, and may do so yet.

Here in SC, we don't usually get much more than 105F, but this summer nothing over 100. Very cool.

And you get really cold winters, too, right?

Not where I am. A really, really cold night here would be about 18 degrees, a really cold day high temp would be about 32. We do have snow a few times a year, but it melts within a day or two.

But drive an hour north or northeast of me, and it gets seriously freezingly cold.
