I went to look, thinking it would be a small poem. It's very big. I have a problem with posting copyrighted material online especially large quantities (beyond what is termed "fair use"). I'm not sure what the legalities are, but as a published poet I would not like to see that much of my work posted online like that. I wonder if that makes me a bad stingy person. I felt too uncomfortable with it, to even read it!

Well, I do understand that. It's funny, I wouldn't consider posting a whole short story, but I have posted many poems--even though I am a writer and did write poetry. I need to think about how I feel about the ethics of that, a little more.

Actually, I guess I got some instant karma for even linking to it--I went to back out of my driveway and ran into the big red Chrysler parked across the street behind me. Big dent in both doors. Ugh!

Oh no! I'm sure that wasnt from your generous sharing impulse, though.

Hmm.
I posted the poem because it spoke deeply to me, was something I needed to hear today, and my journal is a place I take note of such things and share with friends.
I am not sure how to feel about the notion that not even posting such an item, but linking to it, should be the motivator for such a karmic thumping, and about what such a notion implies about my action in the first place. I myself have not gotten thumped so far, today. It has been a good day.

In the spirit of trying to respect the valid concerns of others while also honouring the spirit in which I posted the poem, I'll friends-lock it.

My comment about karma was really meant as a joke. I actually don't think that was karma, but the result of not looking behind me (I think of karma as cause and effect--and can't see any in this situation!)

I'm still glad you posted the poem. Also, as I've thought more about it, that poem and many, many others that long and longer are all over the internet. Surely if the author were concerned about that, she would have complained about some of those sites. I tend not to think of LJ as a place to publish, but as a conversation between friends.

What I really think is that "intellectual property rights" is a losing battle. You are quite right that copyrighted material is all over the internet. The problem for authors, as I see it, is that each instance would be a legal (expensive and time-consuming) hassle to fight, so it's really impossible. I don't know where this will end up eventually, it's similar to the situation of musicians who lose income from their recordings because of the ease of copying them. It's a legal issue I'm glad I don't have to figure out! Anyway, poets are kind of special because I suppose they (we) never really expect to earn much from our products! :o) I'm sorry I made you worry about it, because as I say, it is a losing battle.

If you want to get into the subject of poems posted on the internet, refer to [livejournal.com profile] greatpoets. Enough said. :D
