Come on up for the rising
Come on up, lay your hands in mine
Come on up for the rising
Come on up for the rising tonight

I went up to work for Obama in NC today. I wound up working at a line of early voters in a mainly black area, looking for more volunteers to call people to early voting--in NC, they have a system that allows them to check for registration irregularities if people vote before Nov. 1. I can't tell you what a great time it was--a feeling of hope and anticipation I haven't felt since the Civil Rights days. I don't think most of us in educated middle America know what it's like to have gone years thinking that there's no point in voting because it's just one rich white guy versus another. These new voters are the real immigrants, many of them casting their first vote in their forties and fifties. Easy to recruit volunteers! The country will change, no matter what happens Nov. 4.

There was a volunteer for Obama out in our neighborhood on Friday. Asian, definitely a non-native speaker of English. Out in the rain, poor guy, but he really seemed upbeat about it, despite the weather.

I really hope there's a much higher voter turnout than previous elections. I want to show to McCain and Palin and their ilk that their narrow little definition of America is not a representative of the entire nation.

You know, this election has ramifications outside the USA too, and there is a lot of interest in it here. If Canadians could vote in this election, they would vote overwhelmingly for Obama, according to surveys. Part of it is that feeling of hope and impending change, a perception that if Obama wins, the role of the USA in the world will change for the better. I sure hope that it works out that way, for the whole world's sake.

I wish you could vote! That international connection is indeed one of the most important things about it.

Thank you. A number of my students have been doing the same.
