Inspired by
maeve_rigan, I'm honoring Chaucer's death-day by quoting from Troilus and Criseyde:
"I am myne owene woman, wel at ese."
It makes me think of my cousin who died yesterday, a full colonel in the army and a full professor at the local U. She never married, but had a rich life full of friends, travel, work, and honors. I wonder if I'd have been as adventurous if I hadn't known her when I was growing up. I have a wonderful picture of her and two friends from the Army Nurse Corps, getting ready to hop a plane for Brazil. No Emily Dickinson regrets for her!

And a quote from Terry Pratchett "Lord and ladies":
"Do you ever wonder what life would have been like if you'd said yes?" said Ridcully.
"No."
"I suppose we'd have settled down, had children, grandchildren, that sort of thing..."
"What about the fire?" she said.
"What fire?"
"Swept through our house just after we were married. Killed us both."
"What fire? I don't know anything about any fire?"
Granny turned around.
"Of course not! It didn't happen. But the point is, it might have happened. You can't say 'if this didn't happen then that would have happened' because you don't know everything that might have happened. You might think something'd be good, but for all you know it could have turned out horrible."
