Because of course you can generalise from Germany to the whole of the rest of Europe, all them Europeans is exactly alike... suspect major differences even within Germany, esp (my guess) between former E & W.

It's an interesting concept, but it seems to be based on the assumption that the if Americans did the same amount of "market-based" work there would be no change in the amount of "home-based" work done. And ignores the possibility that the reason for there being fewer home-cooked meals and less time spent doing yard and home improvement is that perhaps there's simply less time to do those things and as opposed to choice. (And did they take into account the amount of time spent taking the kids to and from their activities, heh?)

The way I read it, that was the idea--that either you work at your job many, many hours to make money to pay people to do all those things for you, or you work at home, making less money but doing the stuff for yourself. Either way, you put in the work hours and get the home-based stuff done. I thought they were saying that, but maybe I misread it.
