Happy New Year!

It may be late, but it's so nice to be able to offer a greeting that's not laden with overtones of somebody's controversy.

Unless you celebrate New Year in September, or February... (never mind! Most cultures seem very happy to have several new year celebrations--you can't start anew too often). My resolution: every day is New Year's.

I spent this particular one watching new stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher being installed in our rental house at the beach--not one of them was without some problem that made the installer say he couldn't do it, so my poor brother-in-law took time off from building his own mountain house (!) to come put in a 220-socket and a water line. Thank whatever for talented relatives.

It was a beautiful weekend on the marsh, clear and cool until this morning. The thunderstorms started rolling in, and I had to leave at 5:30 to drive back here to a funeral of a former co-worker, so I was driving in the dark and the pouring rain for over an hour at a time when sensible people are still hitting the snooze button. But I made it.

I didn't achieve my 2005 resolution of doing an unassisted handstand--on NY Eve I tried one last time but still had one toe on the wall. But that's in keeping with my theory that making some progress toward the goal is what matters. And it's a lot more than I could do this time last year.

Hope time and weather are kind to all of you and that 2006 brings you a little nearer to what you really want, too. And if every day is New Year's Day, every night's a celebration...
