Friends in the Northwest, I need some advice. I'm thinking about flying from Chicago to Vancouver in June, then spending a couple of weeks in California, and then returning to Chicago. I can fly in and out of Chicago on Southwest and it's pretty cheap to do one-way tickets (and that will also get me from Seattle to Oakland). How can I go from Seattle to Vancouver and back? I see round-trip flights for around $150--is that the cheapest and easiest, or is there some kind of train or bus that would get me from the Sea-Tac airport over to the west part of Vancouver?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Looks good.

I don't know the name of our hotel, but a senior round-trip is about $90 from airport to airport.

If you take the shuttle to the Vancouver airport, I will come pick you up. I think the trip from Seattle to Vancouver takes about 3 hours, but it's a pretty nice drive, if you don't have to do the driving!
We're at the Gage Towers out at UBC.
Please come!!!!!

What a kind offer! Maybe a group of us can time it to get there at more or less the same time.

The airport is only about 20 minutes from where I live, and about 30 minutes from UBC (if we're not in the midst of rush hour!). I'm planning on picking everyone up, so if there are a few arriving at the same time, it would be good.

I would take the flight. It's not THAT close from SeaTac to Vancouver and unless you have a hankering for driving a freeway I'd recommend the flight. I think it takes five hours if I remember correctly.

Are you coming through Portland? If you do, you should stop by!

If I take a train to Oakland, I very well might! I have another friend in Portland I'd like to see too. That would be great!

I think Portland is in my plans, too--I have a couple of people there I want to see and would also like to do stuff with you folks, if that would work. Any plans on places to stay there, and transportation from Vancouver? I'm thinking about taking the train.

I'll have my car. It's the closest I can come to the "Great ATPo Road Trip" that would ultimately take us all to Powell's Books!! So there's LadyS and me, and I have no idea yet how much other stuff, but chances are we can fit in another person.

We're heading for Portland on the 9th and staying at the Econo Lodge City Center.

I'll have stuff for two weeks in California, though. Possibly I won't fit! But a train was on my mind, and we can see how crowded it's all looking. But I'll check out the place for sure--I think I'll spend at least one day in Portland, maybe two, depending on the flight from there to Oakland.

We'll be staying until Thursday, so we'll have all day Tuesday and Wednesday there. Which will include a trip to Powell's where we will see how many bushels full of books LadyS cab axquire!

No, you can't take the train to Oakland. The track is completely gone in the Siskiyou range. A big avalanche took a quarter mile of track out two weeks ago and they say it's going to be months before trains are running again. Big article in the Oregonian just yesterday on how it was worse than they thought. You can take a bus though ;-) but come anyway!

Uh-oh! Well, might take the train to Portland from Vancouver (if those tracks don't go, too!) and then fly to Oakland. Or get really crazy and rent a car.
