I'm getting memes for Christmas:

My Fortune Cookie told me:
If you never look out of the window, you will not see the llama until it is too late.
Get a cookie from Miss Fortune

Oh, yeah? I remember in summer camp once, I was leading a horse around the riding track, & it snorted snot all over my arm!

My llama story is more on the amusing side. Way back in 1994, I went to Bolivia to see a total eclipse of the sun. An amazing experience, both the eclipse & the trip itself. One day on the altiplano (high, & I mean high, >12,000 feet, plains), the tour group visited some hot springs. We passed a herd of llamas on the way there, & afterwards, I ended up crossing back to the campsite by myself. One of the llamas was grazing a little apart from the others, & it lifted its head to look at me as I approached. I was near the end of the roll of film (remember film?) in my camera, which I raised to frame the llama in the viewfinder. By the time I did, it had dropped its head & resumed grazing. Similarly, I dropped my hands--nothing to shoot. But this got the llama's attention, & it raised its head again. Camera down, head up. Camera up, head down. Repeat comically for the next 2-3 minutes! I did finally get a chance to take the picture--which turned out to be the last on the roll. The sound of the auto-rewind kept the llama's attention for several seconds...gee, maybe I shoulda made some noise & I'd've had my photo sooner.

Strange animals, indeed! Glad you persevered--I might have been tempted to just take a head-down shot.

I had some friends who were therapists that worked with disturbed teenagers (sounds like the job from hell to me) and they kept a herd of llamas that they used to take the kids camping. Evidently the kids could bond with animals better than humans. These same llamas also visited nursing homes, riding up to patients' rooms in the elevator. Imagine standing there waiting for the elevator and when it opens...
