Lydia and her mom just left, after a wonderful three-day visit. (Sadly no pictures--her mom's worried about having her online, though I think locked posts on LJ are fairly secure--???) Anyway, she's just about turned into a little girl now, instead of a big baby. Just in the last few weeks since I saw her in early April, her language has become so clearly enunciated, and her sentences are really complex ("Mop is worried--she doesn't know what we are doing!" "I want you to turn on the light for her.") She's pretty far along to being really independent about using the potty, with very few accidents, and she's also not afraid when she wakes up from her nap and her mother's not around. But most joyful to me is seeing how she loves everything, and how tough she is, and fearless about most things (doesn't like loud noises, like flushing toilets--most kids don't--saws, etc).

I seem to remember that most kids get potty-trained around the same time they get language proficiency. I think there's a connection between language and self-control, a sort of yoga of the bladder! Maybe you have to be able to say to yourself "I feel X" in order to be able to decide whether to act on that feeling or not, and without language you're more at the mercy of your immediate sensations.

I f-lock all the pictures of my nephew, just for that reason. I can't *not* share, but just to be on the safe side....

That's what I'd do too, but I'm not certain about how secure f-locking is. And yet who'd put any effort into getting in a post on an LJ like mine? Not too pervert-promising, I'd think.

That's my thought, basically. My LJ is just another among thousands, I have the option ticked that makes it non-scannable by search engines, I friends' lock posts containing photographs of my family.

This is my home in cyberspace, I want to be able to share things with my friends.

There are lj search spiders that trawl just for photos. I googled my name one time, and the cake photo I posted, came up in that spider's website. I wouldn't dare put the kids photos up on open posts. And even flocked ones give me pause.

Yikes! I had a moment's pause before I uploading a couple of scanned photos of myself to make icons for flocked posts... But, I'm thinking now that anyone can see my icons via the bio page.

I guess we have to measure the risk against... whatever craziness some wacko might come up with.

Yeah. And I might do it with myself, but not someone else's kid. Too bad.

Yeah, I worry about it too. And can't take the risk with somebody else's kid, knowing they'd worry about it.

I have that but it doesn't work for every spider. I have found links to my posts in varied places. I also think those lj's that have been friending randomly are linked to a spidering referencing services. When I saw that they have all friended each other I wondered that. Just my theory for them to get around the spider disabling. They can then access the posts but not the locked ones obviously.

It also depends on where your photo is archived, I think. Is it LJ scrapbook or photobucket, is it private or public on that archive, etc.

Yeah, and that's part of my problem--I use an unlinked page on a very public Earthlink site that I mainly use to rent out our beach house, so I can't password protect the site, and haven't found out how to do just one page, though I'm sure I can. But most of what I post is very public, so in general it doesn't matter.
