My meditation path being Tibetan, which takes reincarnation fairly seriously, I've come to find plausible the idea that we can help animals along the path by letting them share our meditation, and think they really sense that. My own cats have often sat in my lap while I meditated, and seem to like the sound of mantras.
Have I suggested that you check out gleefulfreak? Her practice is quite different from yours, but she writes in great and delightful detail about her Mysore work and you might enjoy some of her old posts.
Actually, while everything else was better during and after the retreat (and still today), I didn't sleep well--maybe just the uncomfortable bed and snoring roommate (but she's one I definitely loved already--a rarity, a southern African-American Buddhist, whose parents were sharecroppers.) I actually enjoyed lying awake and listening to the birds and the snores and watching the moon cross the sky, though. And slept wonderfully once I got back.
