ASOIAF is George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire</>. An HBO series based on the first books starts this spring. He has never finished it, and the last couple of books are decidedly not as good as the early ones. It's about an imagined world that's a good bit like early Renaissance England or Italy--lots of powerful clans fighting for power--but with some supernatural touches. You have to like battles, but if you do, it has wonderful characters, great intrigue, powerful writing.
