LJ dilemma

I was just about to join a new knitting community when I realized that one of the introductory posts was from a young woman* whose mother is a good friend of mine--and the young woman grew up playing with my sons. I'd love to friend her and to join the group--but maybe you don't go online to find yourself surrounded by your mom's friends?! What do you think--shall I friend her, let her know who I am, and join the group, or let her live a life of blissful anonymity on LJ?

*She's a delightful person and we've always gone on well, but haven't been close.
