Meet the Press warned me on Sunday that McCain was about to go after Obama's past with William Ayres (which is sort of ludicrious, considering he was 8 years old at the time) and Obama in retailation was going after McCain's involvement with Charles Keating and the Keating 5, that was in the 80s.
Methinks, Palin should have stuck with the past is history slogan, instead of adopting Biden's the past is prologue - sort of opened a can of worms.
For facts go to factchecker.org and realclearpolitics.org to see if you are right. I don't know. Not sure I care, it was ancient history in both cases and we all make mistakes. But at least Obama's blast at McCain is a bit more relevant to the current crisis, which means it will be more effective. Goes to show you the worst thing that could happen to the McCain campaign was well the economy tanking.
That's why I liked this--it seemed to me to be a good review of the reality of McCain's involvement, that goes way beyond just happening to be involved in something very innocent with someone else who had a tainted past. McCain was really into it.
I really think that the only people who'll get caught up in the Ayers thing are the ones already agains Obama so thoroughly that they can't be changed.
From what I read about Ayers in Wikipedia, he's not that bad. So he was a violent anti-war activist in the 1960s. Now, he's doing fund raisers to combat poverty and trying to feed the hungry. Sounds like a complex person. Obama's association with him was when he served on the board to combat poverty in Chicago.
Meanwhile we have McCain's involvement with Keating, which as far as I can determine did not help anyone but McCain and was about greed and was partially responsible for what is happening now.
At this stage in the game, I don't think people care. McCain wants to make the election about Obama's character and how reliable he can be in the fight against terrorism - which would have worked two months ago, before Black Monday. Now, people are more worried about getting a job, having a home, and putting food on their table - or being able to retire. Terrorism was sooo yesterday. Sure some people still worry about it, but they are in the minority or too well off to worry about the economy.
