I watched I'm Not There last night, and the night before. Partly, it's true that I fell asleep the first time (danger of DVD's), but even the parts I saw while quite wakeful were much better on a second viewing. It seemed to me like a movie version of Dylan lyrics--dreamlike, evocative, on the edge of literal but truly miles away--evocative rather than narrative. I think too that I will have to download the soundtrack. So many great covers I hadn't heard before.

I met Richie Havens, in my younger days. He is such a rich, gentle soul. At the time I met him, he attributed all war to the Y chromosome (but perhaps later days of Margaret Thatcher, Lyndie England, and Ann Coulter have shown him that the X has its dark side, too) and thought that Jesus was free of that. An interesting theology. I'm glad he's still around.

I saw Richie Havens at one of Detroit's downtown festivals a few years ago. It was sunny during his regular set, then he came out for the encore, just him, and the clouds rolled in as he started singing a capella, solo. The moment he finished the song, the rain started to fall.

The apartment where we lived in Berkeley, late 60's-early 70's, was next to some apartments that rented to various musicians over the years, most not well-known any more (Chicken Hursh, who was the drummer for the band Country Joe and the Fish; Prudence from the 50's girl group Patience and Prudence; somebody from the Butterfield Blues Band)--but the best person who lived there was Jerry Rubin of Chicago 9 fame. None of these people would remember me, of course, but it's still a thrill when I run across them.
