I decided to stay and work until the end in North Carolina. No matter what happens tomorrow, I think in part that our volunteer work is its own reward--at least in NC. Somebody said "This is not a campaign about one person, it's a movement." And I feel that way, too.
Just being part of the campaign has been wonderful. It's brought so many people together, and restored our faith in each other in so many ways. I worked today with a retired high school custodian in NC and we enjoyed each other's company so much. Last week I worked in the office with a young computer guy, and appreciated how clearly he could teach me what he was doing so that I could help him (tomorrow it will be something else, and maybe sometime I'll see a dark side, but everything has one).
I felt such admiration for the good sense, hard work, and clear thinking of everyone I worked with--no drama, no McCain-style operatics, just getting it done. I could have gone to the Charlotte rally and heard Obama in person today, but have made the choice that I won't stop work while there's one voter I might reach. For a deep-South state to turn the corner to blue--that is being part of history. I've been talking with Bill and he totally gets it. Being in true-blue Illinois tomorrow, even with Barack there, wouldn't be the same as being in NC, with the people who've fought the good fight.
On this path, effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. Even a little effort towards spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear.
