In the early parts of my life, my only contact with Greyhounds was when I rode one coast to coast, and my main experience with dogs was with Boston terriers--and then the various dogs my sister had, including the one and only Magic the Schnauzer, many Labs, and other great dogs. This summer I had lots of dogginess with my nephews' dogs, Birdie and Jake (and have to say that Jake is way up there with the best dogs I've met!)

But meanwhile I've encountered the Greyhound rescue folks. I've fallen prey to Greyhound love. The first few I met were on the beach. I could see them running at a distance, and couldn't resist introducing myself and sneaking a pet. I used to have a friend who raised Afghans, and they were so neurotic and skittish I expected the Greys to be the same. But the ones I've met have been so peaceful and laidback--"couch potato" seems to be the phrase that gets used.

A couple of days ago I went down to the Chicago dog beach at Belmont harbor and saw a woman with a grey. The dog reminded me so much of the shelter cats and even orphanage kids that I've known--it didn't quite understand how to play. The woman would throw a ball, and the dog would sometimes chase it, but not fetch. It waded in the water, not afraid, but not enthusiastic, either. I can tell that a dog who'd lived in those conditions would be something you'd need to work with. But they're so very beautiful, and their sweet brown eyes, so eager to please...I think even my cat could learn to love a dog like that.

Now if we can just figure out the travel thing...
