Why does my husband think it's a good idea to go running out into the wind and rain that just managed to knock down a 75 foot tree across the street?

My husband would kill to be near a tornado or a hurricane (that is why he married me lolol). He was studying meteorology for a semester once when he had delusions of weatherman grandeur and now is just a weather nerd. He is so jealous of the Weather channel guys that get to go toward the hurricanes.

To witness Nature's majestic power. To feel the rush of wild energy coursing through his blood. To see if anything got smashed by the tree. Maybe someone needed a hero.

Seriously, though, its not as dangerous as you think. Realize that the tree fell because of its height, not in spite of it.

Anyway, everyone evaluates risk differently, and it has little to do with facts. I have no fear of the elements, only other people. I'd guess that driving on the street in traffic on any given day, for example, is riskier than a storm. Yet, if you stay home all day because of it, you aren't prudent, you're neurotic.

The house I grew up in was next to the woods. I was usually always gun-shy about storms when I was young, but mostly because of lightning. I've never been in a hurricane, never actually seen a full blown tornado, but I have been through a couple of massive microbursts. The first one when I was about 20 was absolutely fascinating, no lightning or thunder near by, just rain and hundred-mile-a-hour wind roaring through the trees. Everybody else went for cover, but I went out on our sheltered back porch and watched. It was truly amazing just to stand and watch. Much more interesting than any show about wild weather on TV. Until.. a 40 foot pecan tree blew right over nearby. I went right down in the basement and stayed there. Since then, when I see reporters standing out in hurricane force winds trying to read their stories to show how strong the winds are, I think, 'How crazy are these people?'

Yeah. I grew up in hurricane country and my earliest memory is trees falling and water filling the apartment. So storms aren't fun for me, especially not the ones with names.

And a branch of this particular tree stabbed right through the roof of the house next door.

Hey, here's a thought: maybe all that stuff is just empty, actually of no real value except to strengthen archetypical alpha-male activity while creating a "female-free" zone!

i'm sitting here reading the posts outloud to my husband and he's just laughing. he thinks maybe the gutters needed to be cleaned. i think it's because there might've been a chance to use a chainsaw.

There's something to that chainsaw idea, but I think at the time it was just the general thrill of the whole thing.
