Call for Change

Cut to avoid boring the apolitical:

ETA: So sorry, but apparently now LJ cut means it's completely gone. So here's what I cut, originally:

So I succumbed to the zillionth spam from MoveOn.org and started making calls for them. And I have to recommend it. What do Republican candidates do with all that money? Partly buy slick ads and air time, but partly buy phone calls. And if progressive candidates can get volunteer calling, it minimizes some of the mega-contributions from real estate developers and oil companies.

So I call, each time in a different one of the close races somewhere in the county. I've called NC, CT, IN, OH, etc. (Not my own state--it's never even close here, sadly.) I'm just trying to find people who'll vote for the good guys--not trying to change anybody's mind, or anything. The MoveOn website gives me the numbers and tallies the results, and on election day the ones who are likely voters will be called again.

It's not a bad experience. Lots of no answers, a few irritated by calls, but many who really support the candidates I'm calling for. I've learned a lot about how things look to voters in different parts of the country.

If you're appalled by the way our country is going down the drain, you can call too--get started at http://pol.moveon.org/phone/volunteer/fp.html?id=

If you totally hate being called and wish people like me would get some other life, I really apologize. I wouldn't do this for fun or for money--only because I'm hoping there's a way to counter the weight of big money in this election.

Am I crazy or is there nothing under the cut? :O

Restored now, but so you don't have to go back:

No, but I'm wondering about LJ...

Here's what I hope is now behind the cut:

So I succumbed to the zillionth spam from MoveOn.org and started making calls for them. And I have to recommend it. What do Republican candidates do with all that money? Partly buy slick ads and air time, but partly buy phone calls. And if progressive candidates can get volunteer calling, it minimizes some of the mega-contributions from real estate developers and oil companies.

So I call, each time in a different one of the close races somewhere in the county. I've called NC, CT, IN, OH, RI, VA etc. (Not my own state (SC)--it's never even close here, sadly.) I'm just trying to find people who'll vote for the good guys--not trying to change anybody's mind, or anything. The MoveOn website gives me the numbers and tallies the results, and on election day the ones who are likely voters will be called again.

Ah, okay! Thank you for doing that -- we really need it right now.

Changing the subject

I'm not sure you saw this http://cactuswatcher.livejournal.com/103585.html (http://cactuswatcher.livejournal.com/103585.html) You have to be logged into LJ!

I may be going to do that tomorrow. They're having "calling parties" where people bring their cell phones & get together to make the calls. Problem is, I don't have a cell phone, & I can't afford a lot of long distance charges on my home phone. But one of the calling parties in my neighborhood is actually hosted by a neighbor I know! So I called her, & she's going to see if any of the other attendees can bring a 2nd phone I can use. We'll see...& see if it helps.

[identity profile] mamculuna.livejournal.com 2006-11-05 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's wonderful. I think it will help, if enough of us do it. Good for you!

[identity profile] anomster.livejournal.com 2006-11-05 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope enough other people did it. My neighbor couldn't find anyone w/a 2nd phone, so I didn't go. Dang.

Oops! Didn't mean to leave out my appreciation for your own participation! And BTW, I just got another MoveOn email w/an appeal from Ginmar, who some LJ'ers may remember from links in several members of our community's LJs a ways back.

WE get really cheap long distance with IDT--don't know if that's available to you, and won't help with this. But it's $.05 a minute.
