I'm not at all surprised to see that more Grey's viewers are pissed off by the sudden return of Der/Mer than by the passing of Denny (Iz/Den?). But me, I like the way the show does Derek. I know people like that, really. I am a person like that. I like seeing his self-deception, how he believes that his ethics and reason can overrule his feelings, I like seeing how his anger at Addison is never really dealt with, I like the fact that nobody in this whole mess is a really admirable or totally worthless person. I can't quite imagine the show if he left Addison, she went back to NY, and he and Meredith settled down together. I don't really want that to happen.

What I'd like to see is some growth (rare, on-screen and in life), where he begins to catch on that his feelings about Meredith aren't really unrelated to his feelings about Addison's earlier betrayal. I'd like him to eventually catch on that what he needs to do is shut down the Mer business, come to an end of the Addison marriage, and go on to a new, uncontaminated relationship.

And that's what I'd like to see for Meredith, too, but I think it's less complex than Derek. I'd like to see her realize that the Derek thing is terminally messed up and that the vet is a real person, upfront with his baggage, with whom a future is a possibility.

And then I'd like Denny to come back to life...

Agree with you on all points.

Nothing about the show made me mad, even though I was shouting don't look at him when they were in the elevator, and don't do it when they were in the exam room. The characters are so wonderfully flawed, and their behavior rings so true for them that I just love the show. I was afraid that when Izzy cut Denny's power supply that was going to be a melodramatic moment that the show could not come back from with any real credibility but then they had the interview scenes with the Chief and I stopped caring what would happen in real life to Izzy and just settled in loving watching them talk. It's what I love about the show, I just love watching them talk. And with Sandra Oh it doesn't have to be talking it could just be an eyebrow or a single tear.

I got a phone call during those interviews and missed all but Meredith's--need to go back and replay that section. I completely agree about Sandra Oh's acting. She's incredible. And another character who does things you don't want her to do (or doesn't do things she should) and it makes her all the more complex and interesting.

I'll hate it if we lose Izzie as well as Denny, which some have predicted. Surely she's going to come back and have another round with Alex.

I enjoyed the episode, though as I said to my friends while we were watching, it was like a romance novel come to life. My concern with the Mer/Der is that while I'm digging Derek's anger and conflictedness, I'm not sure if the show realizes how much of a jerk he's being. Sometimes I think we're supposed to see him as a troubled romantic hero, but I'm only seeing passive-agressive manipulative guy.

That does seem to be the question. I argue that he behaves so badly (not communicating with Addison, calling Meredith a whore, dumping the dog thing on her) that I can't believe we're not meant to see him as a not very great guy, but possibly human. That's how we see so many of the other characters. But will admit that it definitely is a soap opera.
